Student leaders have an advantage when it comes to paying for college, but only if they apply for as many of these leadership scholarships as possible.

Leadership scholarships can be a wonderful way for students who are active in their communities to fund a significant part of their higher education, but only if they learn how to apply using the SMART strategies.

Students who volunteer and take on leadership positions will have many more scholarships open to them, and it is never too late to help others in need. Standing out from the crowd is imperative when applying for both scholarships and college. The skills learned and experience gained also help students determine career paths and make important contacts in their communities.

The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award

Provides $20,000 stipends to graduating college seniors to pursue public service anywhere in the world. The award allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service activity for one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career.

The Barron Prize

Open to students between the ages of 8 and 18 (not yet age 19) who are permanent residents of and currently residing in the U.S.A. or Canada. They must be currently working on an inspiring service project or have done so within the past 12 months.

Ron Brown College Scholarship Program

Open to college-bound African American high school seniors who are active in their communities.

Stephen J. Brady Stop Hunger Scholarships

This program recognizes student innovation and youth-led solutions to fight hunger in the U.S.

DAV Jesse Brown Memorial Youth Scholarship

This college scholarship is open to volunteers age 21 or younger who have contributed a minimum of 100 hours credited through DAV or DAV Auxiliary. (Disabled American Veterans)

Coca-Cola Scholars Program

Open to graduating high school seniors. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities.

Military Child of the Year Scholarships

The annual awards recognize eight outstanding young people ages 13 to 18. Of those, seven will represent a branch of the armed forces — the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Space Force — for their scholarship, volunteerism, leadership, extracurricular involvement, and other criteria while facing the challenges of military family life. The eighth award is the Military Child of the Year Award and goes to a military child who has designed a bold and creative solution to address a local, regional or global challenge.

Spirit of Youth Scholarship Fund

The Spirit of Youth Scholarship Fund is an umbrella that supports three separate scholarship opportunities for participants in American Legion Auxiliary programs. One is for American Legion Auxiliary Junior members, another for the Honorary National Junior Division Vice Presidents, and one is for participants in the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation program.

The Husband and Wife Law Team Scholarship

Open to a U.S. high school senior on track to graduate or a college student enrolled in an accredited four-year university/college, or currently enrolled in a two-year college and planning to transfer to a four-year university/college upon completion. The essay question is, “Tell us about a time you had to make a decision that was the more difficult path but the right choice, and how that choice paid off in the long run.” (250-350 words) The essay question used to be about leadership, but it is new this year. The providers seem to value leadership and community service, so I left it on this list.

Alexander Hamilton Scholarship

Open to high-achieving and service-focused high school juniors.

This is a FANTASTIC book to help students discover why they are already leaders. I bought one for all three of my boys for Christmas!

Burress Injury Law Underdog Scholarship

Open to students who have a demonstrated record of volunteer service. Students must have “persevered in the face of adversity and want to use their life experiences to help others.”

Horatio Alger Association National Scholarship

Open to current high school juniors who are planning on entering a U.S. college in the fall after graduation.

Humanity Rising Scholarship

Open to high school students ages 13 and older who are making a difference in the world through volunteerism or creating their own service project.

TechChecks Business Leadership Scholarship

Open to high school and college students who belong to any underrepresented minority demographic. Business leadership and entrepreneurship are important aspects of the application.

Spirit of Generosity Scholarship

Open to high school seniors who have made an outstanding, documented contribution to his or her local community through service to his/her local community through volunteer service of any kind.

Generation Google Scholarship

Open to students pursuing computer science degrees. Demonstrated leadership is an important part of the selection process.

Rubicon Scholarship

Open to High School Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors! APPLY NOW HERE

Open to graduating high school seniors or currently enrolled college students who have expressed an interest in leadership and demonstrated an aptitude for self-reliance.

Burger King Scholars Program

Open to high school seniors or Burger King employees, spouse/domestic partner of an employee, or child of an employee. School and community activities are highly valued as deciding factors to determine the winners.

Equitable Excellence Scholarship

Open to college-bound high school seniors who demonstrate the ability to set and reach goals, as shown by outstanding achievement in school, community, or work-related activities.

Prudential Spirit of Community College Scholarship Awards

Open to all U.S. students in grades 5-12 who have volunteered in their community for at least 12 months prior to applying.

Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship

Open to high school seniors, or the equivalent, who are citizens of the United States. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.

Brower Youth Awards

Open to youth environmental change leaders ages 13 to 22 (as of April 8, 2024) living in North America (including Mexico, Canada, and some Caribbean Islands) and U.S. territories.

National Honor Society Scholarships

Open to high school senior members of an active NHS chapter who are in good standing. The essay must include how scholarship, service, leadership, and character have shaped the student’s high school experience and post-secondary aspirations.

NSCA High School Scholarship

Open to full-time college students who are members of the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association). Community Involvement is an important component of the application.

Innovation in Education Scholarship

Open to current high school or college students in the United States or Canada who have created an original, innovative project that truly makes a difference in the lives of others.

Anidjar & Levine Community Service Scholarship

Open to students currently enrolled in or formally accepted to an accredited U.S. community college, college, or university undergraduate or graduate degree program.

The Good Works Scholarship (On hold for 2024)

Open to all undergraduate, graduate, and law school students, as well as incoming college freshmen at an accredited U.S. educational institution. They must show a dedicated interest in community service and projects pertaining to criminal justice.

Grungo Colarulo Giving Back to the Community Scholarship

Open to any student who is currently enrolled in an accredited community college, undergraduate, or graduate program in the United States. Students who are currently incoming first-year college students and have graduated high school or possess a GED may also apply. Any eligible candidates must be in good academic standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

Underwood Law Office Community Leadership Scholarship

Open to college-bound high school seniors and current college students.

Community Volunteer Scholarship

Open to college-bound high school seniors and current college students who volunteer in their communities. College students must have a G.P.A. of 2.5 or above.
